Mushroom skin serums are a hot beauty trend right now. While functional mushrooms have long been valued for their health-supporting benefits, they are gaining popularity in cosmetics thanks to a diversity of skin-supporting compounds, such as ergothioneine, lentinan, schizophyllan and carotenoids. Fungi are known humectants and may help increase moisture levels to combat the appearance of dryness and rough texture. They are also believed to help boost collagen production, reduce dark spots and prevent the signs of aging by protecting cells from damage caused by free radicals.
What Makes Mushroom Skin Serums So Effective for Skin Health
Many of the fungi used in skincare are well-known for their anti-inflammatory properties, including cordyceps, reishi and lion’s mane. They have been shown to promote a healthy inflammation response, reduce redness and soothe sensitive skin. They are also said to be rich in hyaluronic acid (a super hydrator), glycerin and vitamins A and C, which boost collagen and elastin.
This serum uses reishi and a blend of barrier-boosting mushrooms to help calm stressed skin and brighten dark spots. Its formula is enriched with niacinamide and vitamin C to boost skin elasticity, while tremella mushroom helps to hydrate.
Mushrooms are fairly well-tolerated and shouldn’t cause irritation when applied topically, says cosmetic chemist Ginger King. “They work nicely with other active ingredients, such as vitamin C and retinol,” she adds. “And, unless you have a known allergy or sensitivities to mushrooms, they should be fine for any skin type.”
