- The junior staff will be comprised of both peer reviewers and editors:
- Peer reviewers will have a 2-4 hours/week time commitment.
- Editors will have a 4-6 hours/week time commitment.
- Junior staff applicants will not be chosen if they cannot meet the minimum time commitment.
- All junior staff will be selected through a competitive application process. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis.
- The application will include a written form provided by JIS, as well as a writing sample. The application will be made available online or through accessible formats as required by applicants.
- All junior staff will be selected based on their (1) time commitment, (2) skill set, (3) experience, and (4) history with the Journal.
- All junior staff must have regular access to Microsoft Word and be willing to use a Google-based email account (either a personal Google account or the AU-provided email account).
- All senior staff members will be appointed by the Editor-in-Chief (with the exception of the Editor-in-Chief, who is appointed and approved by the full JIS staff).
- All senior staff must be willing and able to attend all JIS staff meetings, either digitally or in-person.
- All senior staff members must have regular access to Microsoft Word and be willing to use a Google-based email account (either a personal Google account or the AU-provided email account).
- Director of Submissions:
- Commitment: 8 hours/week
- The Director of Submissions will be chosen on the basis of their (1) knowledge of proper procedure and protocol, (2) skills in record maintenance, (3) ability to remotely manage a team through clear and prompt communication, and (4) ability to multitask on several projects at any given time.
- Editorial Director
- Commitment: 10 hours/week
- The Editorial Director will be chosen on the basis of their (1) knowledge and ability to adhere to proper procedure and protocol, (2) proficiency in editing, writing, and giving constructive and effective feedback, (3) ability to actively manage the editorial team through clear and prompt communication, and (4) interpersonal skills, time management, and editorial experience.
- Director of Resources & Training
- Commitment: 8-10 hours/week
- The Director of Resources and Training will be chosen on the basis of their (1) knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style, standard American English grammar, and writing composition, (2) skills in writing, teaching, and training, and (3) communication with others and resource management.
- Director of Outreach
- Commitment: 8 hours/week
- The Director of Outreach will be chosen on the basis of their (1) ability to learn the Journal’s processes, benefits, and value-adds, (2) skills in writing, outreach, and promotion, (3) clear and prompt communication and project management, and (4) ability to organize and lead a team.
- Director of Data & Analytics
- Commitment: 6 hours/week
- The Director of Data and Analytics will be chosen on the basis of their (1) ability to learn the Journal’s process and data capturing needs, (2) skills in excel programming and data management, and (3) clear and prompt communication and troubleshooting. The ideal candidate also exhibits an entrepreneurial mentality and works well on their own.
- Creative Director
- Commitment: 6-8 hours/week
- The Creative Director will be chosen on the basis of their (1) ability to learn the Journal’s brand and digital presence, (2) skills in WordPress, basic website design, and coding, (3) clear and prompt communication and brand management, and (4) familiarity with graphic and/or document design. The Creative Director must also have regular access to a WordPress-compatible web browser.
- Director of Operations
- Commitment: 10-15 hours/week
- The Director of Operations will be chosen on the basis of their (1) knowledge of budgetary processes, in addition to their knowledge of the SIS political atmosphere and GSC political procedures and operating processes, (2) organizational skills, (3) skills in remote and in-person management, (4) skills in procurement and general strategy related to the Journal’s processes, and (5) clear and prompt communication.
- Commitment: 20 hours/week
- The Editor-in-Chief is a collectively appointed position within JIS.
- The incoming Editor-in-Chief should be vetted in the final semester that the current Editor-in-Chief holds the position to ensure the incoming Editor-in-Chief is properly onboarded.
- While the current Editor-in-Chief is in charge of finding their replacement, the replacement must be officially approved by a majority of JIS staff members.
- The Editor-in-Chief will be selected based on their (1) knowledge of and commitment to the Journal, (2) their ability to dedicate time and resources to the management of the Journal, (3) their knowledge of the Journal’s internal processes as well as the larger systems and structures at SIS that influence how the Journal is managed, (4) their skills in writing, editing, clear and prompt communication, remote and in-person management, project management, team development, and capacity building, and (5) their familiarity with and connection to the various stakeholders in the Journal, including the GSC, faculty advisors, and JIS staff.
- The Editor-in-Chief will also be a member of the SIS GSC Executive Council. As a member of the GSC Executive Council, they must attend all GSC Executive Council and general body meetings. If the Editor-in-Chief is unable attend these meetings in person or digitally, they may have another senior staff member attend instead.
- Because of the unique roles and responsibilities of this position, the Editor-in-Chief must be physically present on campus on a regular basis (at least four days a week during the Fall and Spring semesters).
